As a young VISTA Volunteer in the mid-1970s, Julie’s experience working with older adults primed her for a career in Gerontology. She earned the credentials: Master of Science in Gerontology, Master’s in Social Work, and PhD in Social Work. Julie is Professor Emerita at Dominican University in Illinois where she is now adjunct faculty in health sciences and social work. She engages students in experiences with older adults to encourage students to pursue careers in aging-related fields. Julie speaks about how intergenerational connections help to dispel ageism. She describes the heavy demands on women as caregivers, including caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s. Julie identifies key policy issues that need advocacy, such as financial benefits for caregivers who leave the workforce.

“Working in gerontology prepared me for many aspects of getting older but it is impossible to totally understand the later aging process until you are in it.” – Julie Bach PhD
