Loving Your Marriage in Retirement: Keep the Music Playing

By Sally Strosahl

Loving Your Marriage in Retirement: Keep the Music Playing offers  practical solutions to the issues many couples face during the transitions  presented by retirement. This book is for couples who want to reinvent or  improve their marriage and themselves as they face retirement and the  challenges of aging — or are already into the transition and want to  enhance the quality of their relationship. Written by Sally Strosahl, a  marriage and family therapist, with contributions by Tom Johnson, her  husband and a retired newspaper editor, this book includes stories from  their 50-year marriage, parenting their three children and being  grandparents, her client work and interviews with couples they call the  “Wise Married Elders” who share the wisdom they gained in transitioning  their marriages into retirement with ease and vitality.

Endorsed by renowned therapist couple Harville Hendrix and Helen Hunt,  authors of Getting the Love You Want and Making Marriage Simple.

“A thriving marriage goes through transitions, beginning with the 7th year. The other  major and challenging transitions occur later, in the retirement years. The author and  her husband, having entered that space, offer a reliable path for the golden years which  every retiring couple should take to insure their thriving for the rest of the journey.  Loving Your Marriage in Retirement should be read by every couple making that  transition. “

Reader Reviews:

Cheri:    Very Helpful for Already Retired Couple

As part of an already early-retired couple of 15 years, I wondered if this book would be  helpful for us. In a few words, yes it was. My husband and I had gotten into a rut after  our post-retirement move and, at times, suffered from poor communication skills trying  to figure out how to bring some new experiences back into our life. Lucky for us, the  author Sally Strosahl provided a wealth of ideas and communication exercises to assist  us in creating, once again, a more interesting and vibrant life as a couple. I highly  recommend this book to newly retired couple as well as to those of us who have been in  that journey for awhile.

Lynn:   Personal Tone

Sally has woven in the many varied aspects to consider & contemplate when nearing  retirement or years into retirement as a couple! The challenges and concerns are  explained in such a personal tone, the reader will think he/she is sitting with Sally  herself! Sally points out “how to keep the music playing” through research based  information and stories of couples in all stages of retirement! The book goes well with  morning coffee as well as wine later in the day! Turn on the music and enjoy a book that  will enrich your life.

Cathy:   A Wonderful Guide for Keeping Your Marriage Alive

Having been retired for 20 years, I found Sally and Tom’s book to be a wonderful  catalyst for my husband and my relationship. The book is easy to read and is rich with  stories and examples of how to “keep the music playing”…..even in times of dissonance.  The words are spoken from Sally’s rich experience of working with couples and Tom’s  short and to the point additions bring a rich groundedness to the work. I highly  recommend this book for couples at any age.

Also endorsed by LGBTQ couples who appreciate having their stories included in a  self help book about marriage and retirement and the challenges of aging.
